One size does not fit all...

In teaching, one size does not fit all. Today's schools serve children from a variety of families and backgrounds, with a variety of learning strengths and needs. When a teacher reaches out to an individual student and provides services to enforce an individual education program (IEP), only then will the best learning experiences become evident and possible . It's not easy, but it is critical for success.

Over my 30 years as a Special Education teacher I have discovered that many parents become self proclaimed experts in knowing all there is to know on how to deal with school administrators and teachers. This is a serious mistake and they create many undesirable hurdles for years to come.

Why?

Most parents are not aware that teachers and school districts do not have to provide checklists or advise them on all of the services their child may be entitled to. Most parents find out too late for some services and often become financially crippled by not asking or knowing what services are covered by the laws.

Another costly mistake is assuming a lawyer can resolve all your problems. When considering to hire a lawyer for assistance, remember they are about laws and enforcement when all else fails. Your goal is to avoid never needing them. A Special Education Advocate with degrees in Special Education, classroom experience and direct involvement with children speaks volumes of clout against deceptive practices by school administrators and district management personnel.

If you hired a lawyer - would they know what behaviors are acceptable in a classroom setting? What teaching credentials have they earned? Would they understand how to create a lesson plan, what is appropriate discipline for various disabilities or have the ability to know and understand your child's limitations and strengths? Who they rely upon for expert advice - classroom teacher or Special Education teacher with years of experience?

Lawyers are necessary at certain times, all to often, when all else fails and when parents seek the courts to solve what should have been easily handled within the school district and local school.

Special Education Advocates are the experts many lawyers retain and use in district hearings and in the courtroom to help resolve those issues.

Use a Special Education Professional Advocate first and consider the questions below as you do:

Was your child removed from a class without notification?

Does your child qualify for Speech Therapy, Adaptive PE or require IBI (Intensive Behavioral Intervention), but no one is discussing these options?

When was your child's last Triennial (3 year evaluation)?

Who is required to be present for an IEP?

One common thread to realize as our children grow - Access curricula at an appropriate level based on their individual assessment is vital.

What if, your child was intentionally placed in the wrong class for his grade level? Is your child's right to a proper education being denied as a result of over crowding in the classroom, principal mismanagement, possibly district turning a blind eye or "parents would not notice" practices. It's being done everyday. Is your child one of those children who are being treated as a second class citizen?

Let us help you understand your child's rights and take control. Call today for a "FREE 30 Minute" consultation.
